7 signs your website needs a redesign (before it costs you clients)
How to tell if your website has fallen behind: seven objective signs — mobile, speed, Google, brand image — and what to do about each one before losing more clients.
Your website speaks for your business before you do. And it does so in milliseconds: visitors decide whether to stay or leave almost without reading anything, purely on what they perceive. The problem is that, from the inside, it's hard to see when a website no longer keeps up. These are the seven objective signs we use to diagnose it.
//1. On mobile you have to zoom in
Most of your visits come from mobile. If people have to pinch the screen to read, if buttons are tiny or the menu breaks, you're losing more than half your audience at the door. Today a website doesn't "adapt" to mobile: it's designed for mobile first and for desktop second.
//2. It loads slowly and it shows
Count to three from the moment you type your address until the page is readable. Did you get there? Bad news: every extra second multiplies abandonment, especially on mobile. Speed can be measured for free with PageSpeed Insights; if your mobile score is in the red, you have the clearest sign of all.
//3. The design gives away its age
Sliders with stock photos, centred text in three different fonts, gradient buttons from another era… You don't need to be a designer to notice: compare your website with the top three in your sector on Google. If yours looks a generation older, your client perceives it too — and translates it into "are they up to date in their own field?".
//4. You don't show up on Google even searching for yourself
Search for your service and your city. If your website doesn't appear in the top results even for obvious searches, there are usually structural problems: poor architecture, copy that doesn't answer what people search for, or a site Google can't read properly. A well-planned redesign is the chance to fix it at the root.
//5. It no longer tells what you sell today
The business evolves faster than the website: new services that aren't listed, others you no longer offer, photos of the old premises, a team that changed. If you have to clarify things out loud when showing your website to a client, the website is working against you.
//6. Updating anything is an ordeal
- >Changing an opening time requires calling someone who "handles the website".
- >Nobody remembers the panel passwords, or everyone is afraid to touch anything in case it breaks.
- >The underlying technology is no longer updated and every patch opens another hole.
A healthy website gets updated in minutes and without fear. If yours depends on one specific person or on a system nobody wants to touch, you don't have a website: you have a liability.
//7. It gets visits but doesn't generate enquiries
The definitive sign. If people come in but don't call, don't write and don't book, the website is failing at its only job: turning visits into clients. It's usually the sum of everything above — slowness, visual distrust, copy that doesn't guide — and no tool fixes it piecemeal.
| Sign | What the client perceives | How it should be |
|---|---|---|
| Zooming on mobile | "This is uncomfortable, I'm leaving" | Read and navigate one-handed, effortlessly |
| Slow loading | "It doesn't work" | Content visible in 1-2 seconds |
| Dated design | "Are they up to date in their field?" | A current image that reflects your real level |
| Invisible on Google | They can't find you: you don't exist | Showing up when people search for what you offer |
| Outdated content | "Is this still true?" | The website tells the story of your business today |
| Hard to update | (They don't see it — you suffer it) | Changes in minutes from your own panel |
| No enquiries | Nothing. And that's the serious part | A clear path to contacting or booking |
An outdated website is not neutral: every day it chips away at the trust you work so hard to earn in person.
